Kyrenia

Resort Information

Considered the most beautiful vista in North Cyprus, Kyrenia, or Girne in Turkish, is flanked by the Castle of St Hilarion on the Besparmak mountain range and the picturesque harbour with its dazzling cool blue Mediterranean Sea. Kyrenia is the biggest holiday resort in North Cyprus, the centre of tourism, as well as a cultural & historical delight. Kyrenia castle stands at one end of the crescent shaped harbour which retains its original character. This seventh-century castle bears the marks of Byzantime, Lusignan and Venetian periods and houses the famous shipwreck museum. Hidden amongst Kyrenia’s steep serpentine alleyways are the Anglican Church, the Cafer Paşa Camii, the Ottoman Cemetery and the Chrysopolitissa Church which attest to the spiritual life of the town. There is a small Folk Art & Icon Museum and the Alevkaya area which is home to a Herbarium where you can see the orchids and rare plants species endemic to Cyprus. Nearby Bellapais, one of the island’s most charming villages, featuring the enchanting ruins of the Bellapais Abbey, built in the 12th century by exiled Augustinian monks, is located on the hillside above Kyrenia. There is an array of shops along the main street where you can purchase everything from designer good to antiques and local handmade products.

Kyrenia is an ideal holiday retreat. After absorbing some of the impressive history you can unwind in the quiet tranquillity of the quayside or stroll along the cobbled streets. By night, Kyrenia’s harbour is transformed into a hive of activity as its numerous cafés and restaurants offer the opportunity to eat, drink and socialize with friendly locals. For that perfect Mediterranean holiday, Kyrenia ticks all the boxes, its pretty harbour, cobbled street, quaint restaurants, culture and historic sites, giving you a true taste of authenticities.
